Hospital police said The state medical office said the death had been ruled a drowning associated with a heart attack Known for his work in lipid metabolism and its disorders Fredrickson first worked for the NIH in 1953 at the National Heart Institute as a clinical associate He went on to hold several positions including director of intramural research before being named NIH director in 1975 He held the position at the premier biomedical research agency until 1981 Fredrickson was credited with discovering two genetic disorders Tangier disease a disease related to cholesterol transport in the body and cholesterol ester storage disease After leaving NIH Fredrickson served as president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1984 to 1987 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Bethesda Md Donald Fredrickson a former director of the National Institutes of Health and an expert in cholesterol drowned in his pool after suffering a heart attack authorities said Tuesday He was 77 Maxwell Rabb Ex-Envoy THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Maxwell Rabb the former US ambassador to Italy and secretary to the cabinet in the Eisenhower administration died Sunday in Manhattan He was 91 Rabb died of injuries suffered in a fall while walking to his law office his wife Ruth said President Ronald Reagan appointed Rabb to the post in Rome in 1981 Rabb stayed there until 1989 when he returned to his law
