Jung Kook and Latto’s ‘Seven’ Already a Winner in Streams andSales - https://lnkd.in/gbXMW_AP - - New Post Shared by www.shipwr3ck.com - - Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up newsletter, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip. This week: Jung Kook’s Latto-assisted new single looks on its way to being another BTS solo smash, a couple very different singer-songwriters go viral, Rylo Rodriguez takes the next step to hip-hop stardom and more.Jung Kook & Latto’s ‘Seven’ Sprints Out to Seven-Figure Daily StreamsAfter Jung Kook made a solo pop splash last year alongside Charlie Puth with “Left & Right,” which peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, early indications are that “Seven,” the BTS member’s new collaboration with Latto, will climb even higher. The rhythmic pop single got off to a scorching streaming start upon its release last Friday - July 14 -, with 5.11 million U.S. on-demand streams that day, according to Luminate. That number dipped over the weekend, but was still comfortably clocking over 2.5 million daily streams through Monday, accruing 13.7 million total streams in its first four days of release. Meanwhile, “Seven” earned over 34,000 in digital sales on Friday, and added another 32,000 digital copies from Saturday to Monday – with more sales expected from the set’s CD single, which is currently listed as “sold out” on the official BTS webstore.Produced by Watt and Cirkut, “Seven” sports a shuffling beat, surprisingly explicit hook - “You know night aftеr night / I’ll be f–kin’ you right / Seven days a week,” Jung Kook sings - and combination of pop and rap that could work well at top 40 radio - with the song’s clean edit, of course -. We’ll know early next week just how high “Seven” can debut, but after his BTS group mate Jimin scored a solo No. 1 single earlier this year with “Like Crazy,” Jung Kook is probably just a few days away from having his highest-charting single as a lead artist. – JASON LISPHUTZFaye Webster Once Again the Definition of Indie ViralityFaye Webster has gone viral once again. Last summer, Billboard reported that two versions of the singer-songwriter’s “Kingston” were trending among TikTok viewers, giving her a 92% gain in streams over about a seven week period, according to Luminate. Now, “I Know You,” a previously little-known song from Webster’s back catalog, is spiking on TikTok. Released on her self-titled 2017 album, “I Know You” is being used to accompany a myriad of different types of videos, but it has been particularly popular for creators to share photo

How a 2012 Chart Change May Have Influenced Country’s 2023 Hot 100Trifecta - https://lnkd.in/g9E3JHha - ( New Post Shared by www.shipwr3ck.com ) - When country tracks ranked at Nos.1, 2 and 3 on the Billboard Hot100 for the first time in history, it happened in part as a result of reverberations from a significant change in consumption measurements 11years ago.Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” succeeded on country radio before it spread to other formats. Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” is a remake of a 1988 pop single that earned airplay on multiple formats after it broke out via streaming. Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” owes its rise to streaming and downloads spurred by a video controversy.A study by a Cornell researcher released earlier this year suggests that the introduction of Billboard’s multimetric Hot Country Songs chart in October 2012 changed the industry’s understanding of consumer behavior. In turn, it made gatekeepers and creators more accepting of crossover elements and widened country’s potential in the marketplace. It also allowed Aldean’s release, a song that is far from the most-played one on current radio playlists, to top the charts through other means.Related‘Try That in a Small Town,’ ‘WAP’ & More No. 1 Hot 100 Hits That…08/09/2023“A Change of Tune: The Democratization of Market Mediation and Crossover Production in the U.S. Commercial Music Industry” — authored by Yuan Shi, assistant professor at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business — suggests that when the primary chart expanded from radio-only data to a list built on airplay, sales and streaming, consumers replaced broadcasters as the ultimate arbiter of the format’s most popular songs. Those fans are less apt to put boundaries on the definition of country.“The chart change, what it really does is give more voice to the consumers,” Shi says. “The creators and labels can now see, ‘Oh, this is what consumers want,’ even though they may not get played on radio.”Exemplifying that phenomenon is “Heartbroken,” a new track by producer/DJ Diplo, pop singer Jessie Murph and hip-hop artist PoloG. Though none of the acts are country-centric, the song fits current standards in the genre and debuted at No.14 on the Hot Country Songs chart dated Aug.5, despite a general lack of airplay. It’s not that the chart single-handedly changed country. But it did reflect consumer interest generated by means other than the radio, where programmers filter the music that’s exposed on the station. Those programmers have a vested interest in maintaining a sound distinct to their format. Shi’s study,

Every Artist With 100 or More Billboard Hot 100 ChartHits - https://lnkd.in/dTEzbaaK - Debuting a song on the Billboard Hot 100 is a highlight of any musician’s career. It’s Billboard’s premier songs chart, after all, and the stars often must align in order to stand with the best of the best. The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. In total, over 8,000 artists have landed a song on the survey, which launched on Aug. 4, 1958. Of those artists, only 15 have charted at least 100 total songs.Elvis Presley, whose career predates the Hot 100’s launch, became the first artist to tally 100 total hits. He scored his 100th (of an eventual 109 total) in May 1975 with “T-R-O-U-B-L-E.” He held the record for the most overall chart entries until 2011, when the Glee Cast surpassed him, and then nearly doubled his total — reaching 207 entries. That record stood until 2020, when Drake stormed past the TV troupe following his song “Oprah’s Bank Account” reaching the listing. Drake now leads all artists with a whopping 298 total entries on the chart in his career (through the Hot 100 dated Aug. 26, 2023). He’s one of just three artists to top 200 total songs, along with Taylor Swift (212) and the Glee Cast (207).Three artists have joined the 100-hits club in 2023 alone, so far. YoungBoy Never Broke Again achieved the milestone in May, and, fittingly, became the youngest artist to ever reach the feat, at age 23. Lil Uzi Vert became the 14th act to join in July, after releasing Pink Tape. Travis Scott then became the most-recent artist to gain entry on Aug. 12, thanks to the release of his new LP Utopia. As for who might be next in line to join the elite group, The Weeknd is currently at 96 Hot 100-charted songs, followed by Eminem (95), Young Thug (92), James Brown (91), Lil Durk (87), 21 Savage (85), Beyoncé (82), Juice WRLD (79) and Gunna (77).While it’s rare for artists to chart triple-digit entries on the Hot 100, it’s become a more regular occurrence since the ranking began including streaming figures in 2007. As such, certain artists have been able to chart a high number of songs on the Hot 100 in recent years after releasing high-profile albums. The model contrasts with prior decades, when acts generally promoted one single at a time in the physical-only marketplace and on radio. That shift in consumption helps explain why artists have been able to chart many songs over short spans in recent years. Here’s an updated look at every act in history to chart 100 or more songs on the Hot 100, as of th

With ‘f*ckumean,’ Gunna Gets First No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop SongsChart - https://lnkd.in/gARHAji6 - - New Post Shared by www.shipwr3ck.com - - Gunna claims his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as “f*ckumean” advances from the runner-up spot on the list dated July 22. The single, the breakout hit from his album, A Gift & a Curse, leads as it continues to improve in all three metrics that inform the chart – streaming, radio airplay and sales. As Gunna captures his first champ on the genre chart, he outdoes his previous best of No. 2 for “Pushin P,” with Future and featuring Young Thug, from January 2022. “f*ckumean,” likewise, takes the crown on the Hot Rap Songs chart – another first for the rapper – and ascends 8-7 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.“f*ckumean,” released on Gunna/Young Stoner Life/300/3EE, traces most of its chart-topping week to a 23.7 million official U.S. stream haul in the week ending July 13, according to Luminate. Notably, the song has increased in streams each week since its release, having started with 15.2 million in its debut frame and risen to 18 million, 20.2 million and now 23.7 million in subsequent weeks. Before “f*ckumean,” Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit” was the last Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs No. 1 to begin with three consecutive weeks of streaming gains, from 5.3 million clicks in its first full week, to 9.7 million, 17.3 million and 18.5 million in succeeding frames. Thanks to its 23.7 million sum in the latest tracking window, “f*ckumean” retains its crown for a third week on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs. It likewise repeats, though at No. 4, on the all-genre Streaming Songs list.In the sales market, “f*ckumean” sold 1,000 downloads in the week ending July 13, up 37% from the prior frame. The gain pushes the song 23-16 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales. For radio airplay, meanwhile, “f*ckumean” registers for the first time on a Billboard airplay chart with its No. 40 arrival on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, where it climbed 45% in plays as it begins its official, label-promoted rollout. The track is being serviced to R&B/hip-hop and rhythmic radio stations, and, given its obvious popularity with listeners through streaming metrics, should be a strong contender for the upper reaches of radio ranks soon.“f*ckumean” appears on Gunna’s latest studio album, A Gift & a Curse, released on June 16. The set debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and secured Gunna’s fourth consecutive champ. How the Billboard Hot 100 Was Born, on Aug. 4, 1958, in the Words of One of ItsFounders - https://lnkd.in/gh2_Vdzu - ( New Post Shared by www.shipwr3ck.com ) - “I look at my schooling as, in part, my early years at Billboard.”That’s how late Sire Records co-founder and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame enshrinee Seymour Stein recalled to Billboard in 2015 of his industry education. That upbringing included the unveiling of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the magazine’s Aug. 4, 1958, issue. At the time, Stein was a high school student eager to learn, and help shape, the music business, soaking up information firsthand from inside Billboard’s offices.RelatedMadonna Pays Tribute to Seymour Stein: ‘He Changed and Shaped MyWorld’08/04/2023The Hot 100’s hot shot debut wasn’t front-page news, but it did make page two, in an editorial succinctly headlined “The Billboard Hot 100”: “On pages 36 and 37 of this issue, we are proud to present The Billboard Hot 100, the fastest, most complete and most sensitive index to the popularity of recorded music in America. This new chart feature, which each week will list the 100 most popular recorded sides, is a guide to potential, as well as the current hits.”When the ranking premiered, ruled by Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool,” it encompassed “such factors as disc jockey plays, jukebox activity and record sales.” Today, airplay is still among the Hot 100’s data mix, with downloads continuing the form of record sales. Streaming is essentially a modern-era, digital jukebox, with clicks of a mouse having replaced the clicks of a mechanical arm selecting and dropping a 45 perfectly into place. At the heart of the Hot 100’s launch was then-head of charts Tom Noonan, along with music-radio-TV editor Paul Ackerman and Stein. “Tom and Paul were great mentors to me,” said Stein. “It was such an honor when Tom asked me to help start the Hot 100.”Similar to today, as Billboard wrote in its story unwrapping the first Hot 100, “Data is obtained and tabulated right up to deadline time” (with Luminate data figures having fueled the chart since 1991, and multiple streaming sources having joined in recent years). “Weighted factors in the carefully designed formula result the fastest and most complete guide to the national popularity of records.”While the Hot 100 marks over six decades as the chronicle of American hits, Stein’s legacy has likewise become legendary. Sire’s first signee? Steven Tallarico. Then in a band called Chain Reaction, he’d change his name to Steven Tyler as frontman for Aerosmith. In 1975, Sire signed the Ramones and Talking Heads.
